P1 and P2: Explain how special effects enhance audio visual content and Explain how visual effects are used to generate audio visual content
Visual Effects Techniques
You can see that these are digitally composited because some of the locations the characters are in just seem unrealistic or would require much more effort to film. Such as there is a scene where a man is sitting on a rock in the desert in a small sand storm. This would be incredibly hard to film and much easier to digitally compose
You can clearly see that some of the scenes are done with a green screen because the locations that characters are in are either hard or impossible to create.
CGI is used to create objects or beings hard or impossible to create in real life. Game of Thrones uses a lot of CGI to create dragons, castles and zombies.
Matte paintings are used for backgrounds. They use already existing images to create something else. This can be used as the background for a green screen.
This is a great example of morphing. Morphing is when one thing changes into another. Professor McGonagall morphing from a cat is impossible to create without morphing.
Rotoscoping is where an effect is added to the film frame by frame. This was used is Star Wars to make the lightsabers. They did it like this because there was no other choice back when it was made.
3D graphics were used in Star Wars The Force Awakens to create the Star Destroyers and Tie Fighters. They tried to make the graphics as real as possible to improve to feel of the film and it show how technology has come since the first Star Wars.
Special Effects Techniques
Mechanised props are props with motors and can be controlled via remote control. K9 from Doctor Who is a good example of this. These can easily be recreated and distributed as toys.
In this clip we see Captain America burst through wooden and glass doors and windows in pursuit of the Winter Soldier. These are good examples of stunt props.
In this clip we see AT-ATs attacking the rebel base on Hoth. The AT-ATs are scale models because CGI was not around when this film was made.
