I watched the opening scene for the film 'Twister'. The scene is basically a house, with a family inside, being destroyed by a gigantic tornado.
There are lots of sound elements used in this scene, both Diegetic and Non-Diegetic. Some Diegetic sounds are the wind, lightning, people screaming and the dog. All of these are done as sound effects and added in post production. Other Diegetic sounds would be the Man shouting 'I can't hold it' and the TV news report. These are dialogue. They are still added in through post production through ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). Non-Diegetic sounds would be the music and title sound effects like the 'ringing' when the titles come up.
The music at the start created an eerie atmosphere. This atmosphere was continued by the sound effects of wind and thunder. As the clip went on, the wind became louder and more violent to indicate the storm's approach and the impending doom that awaited the characters. The thunder turned into lightning to reflect imminent danger. The dialogue was also key as when the man keeps saying things like "we need to get out of here!" and "I can't hold it!" as they show that this is a serious and fatal situation. We were shown that this is a matter of life or death.
The Dialogue created a mood of fear. The little girl was terrified of the storm and she continuously cries out "Daddy!". The Man is also shown to be frightened as when he says "We need to get out of here!". He seems to be less scared of the storm than he is for his family's safety. The sound effects help to create mood but it is the dialogue that mostly presents the mood. They complement each other to show the audience how the characters feel.
Lots of parts portray feelings of danger. The sound effects are good at this as they are a main focus in creating and bringing the storm to life because we don't really see it so the loud winds and thunder and lightning are all we've got to go on. The dialogue is another big factor as we can see in their expressions and the way they say their lines that this storm is a big deal and could possibly kill them.
Radio Drama
I listened to the first scene of the Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song Audio Drama, The Rulers of the Universe. The scene is simply the 8th Doctor arriving at a space party.
Because there is no visual part of the drama, the drama has to create a picture through sound elements. The main source of sound elements is the dialogue. The dialogue is all diegetic and this gives the listener a sense like they're in the scene. The first piece of dialogue is of a person (most likely an alien) giving an announcement like a pilot would when you get off a plane. This bit of dialogue has some sort of effect on it to make the voice sound non human and there's another effect that slightly distorts the dialogue to make it sound like its over an intercom. Both of these effects on the dialogue and the dialogue itself (says things a human wouldn't usually say such as 'Any possessions left will be disintegrated) tells the audience that you are in space and it gives you the influence that you are disembarking the ship. There are sound effects like background chatting, sounds of carts being pushed around and general ship matenance sounds. There is music in the scene which is Non-diegetic. The music helps to set the scene. The music has a Sci Fi feel to it. This tells the listener that they are in space. All of these help to create a visual story in your mind. It encourages you to use your imagination and the sounds help you slot all the pieces in place and create a story.
Animation
I watched the short animation 'In a Heartbeat'. The animation tells a short story of a school boy who is attracted to another boy and his heart pulls them together.
This is a very good animation and the sound elements are vital in portraying this story. There is no dialogue in this and the story is told primarily by the sound effects and music. All the music is Non-Diegetic as it helps the audience understand how the characters feel. The music changes when the characters are happy, sad, embarrassed e.t.c. . The sound effects are all diegetic. The sound of the heartbeat, the doors opening and closing, the footsteps and all the noises the heart makes.
