Commercial considerations: The client has not specified what advertisements they want in the app but there can always be adverts for local businesses such as Costa or Next. The companies will be more likely to sponsor and advertise on the app because it is free and more people will be able to view it. How money would be generated from this would be that for example Costa would have to pay a monthly fee for their advert to be featured in the app. On some pages, for example the information page, there will be some shops included. This will initially be free but in later additions local businesses could pay to have their business specifically featured on this page. Graphical User Interface: There will be mainly buttons to help the user navigate around the app. There will also be icons for the main pages of the app at the bottom of the screen for example for the information button there will be an information icon and for the quiz there will be a question mark. There may also be scenarios where the app will open up the internet or Youtube to show you a website or video about a place in Cambridge. I may decide to add little icons in the quiz as maybe a hint towards the right answer.
Interactivity: There are a few interactive features. With the exception of the buttons, there will be quizzes that will be able to test the user's knowledge about Cambridge. All the questions in the quizzes will be based on the information in the information section. They will be fairly short but should be able to provide a positive user experience. There will also be a map, that you can search for places and by tapping on a place such as the Fitzwilliam Museum it will give you a small run down of what is there and the address. There will also be a link to a website that the user can tap to find out more about the specific place for example it the user tapped on a restaurant, the app would tell you where it is and it would provide a link to their website so you can book a table. There will also be a few promotional videos for Cambridge and some specific places such as Cambridge University.
M2: Explain the legal and ethical issues relating to product ideas.
There are lots of legal issues to consider. Copyright is a big one as everything I use could be subject to copyright, things such as: images, buttons, fonts, videos, sounds and the app itself. I will need to be careful in picking what I use. I will try to make everything myself but there will be some aspects that I won't be able to/won't have time to do such as promotional videos and maybe some sounds. I have a large amount of pictures of places in Cambridge from Unit 3 and as I have the copyright to them, I will use those instead of going out and taking new photos. Libel is basically defamation of character or place. I am fairly certain that this will not be an issue. I will make sure that information in the app is correct and that everything is portrayed in a positive light as if I was to portray Cambridge with a negative view, not only will I be failing by not fulfilling the app's goal but I am likely to be sued by Cambridge City Council for defamation of place as I would be showing bad things about Cambridge that may not be necessarily true . I will also try to make sure that there is as little offence as possible.
The data protection act is the act of parliament that keeps personal data such as your name and age is kept safe and secret. This will not be an issue with my app as there is no log in features and there is not any features that will allow someone to find out people's identity. There is no features that require the user to be online (with the exception of videos and the map).
Identity theft is where people (criminals) use your personal data to create profiles and pretend to be you. Again, this will not be an issue with my app as no part of the app will ask you for your information. The only part that I could see being a problem, and this also concerns the data protection app, if the user is watching one of the promotional videos from youtube on the app then then Youtube may ask them to log in to Google or the video could direct them to the Youtube app or website where the user can log in. I don't think this is a big issue for me as this is not a system regulated or controlled by me so I can not be held accountable. I will however put disclaimers on the app saying that it will not ask the user for personal data.
Cyber-Stalking is where people harass others over the internet. There could be a slight issue due to there being an map on the app, this could require the phone's GPS to be on and this could allow people to track the user. Other than that, I don't see any issues that could arise. There are no features that allow the user to log in and there is no comments system. The Youtube comments could be a slight issue but only if the user is sent to the Youtube app from my app but the chances of somebody being stalked through this is incredibly slim. There are also a few ethical issues. Misrepresentation is where you make a false statement about someone or a group of people and play it off like it's fact. This is not illegal but considered morally wrong. Most of the time this is just one's opinion and you can actually sue the person who wrote it for slander. There are a few scenarios where I could misrepresent something for example in the information section there are lots of places where I can misrepresent the places or the people who go there or live there. I will make sure that there is only fact in the information section and the app as a whole but I will add in positive opinions about Cambridge such as quotes from locals and I may exaggerate about certain things such as the weather and how good places are to visit to make things more appealing.
Decency is simply behaviour that is moral and acceptable to society. There shouldn't be any issues with this as I am going to write things that are there to promote Cambridge and if I was to write indecently, it would put people off and they wouldn't want to visit Cambridge and thus the app would fail its purpose. I will write as decently as possible to promote Cambridge and make people want to come here whether it be for a visit or to study.
